The image of the KDN headquarters facility is conceived to convey the nature of the flow of information and electricity. The tower represents the center and source of the energy from which a series of omni-directional diagonal lines radiate from the center and merge to form the building masses and reinforce the connection to the site and the ground. The south wall of the tower becomes the dominant feature wall presenting identity to the public. The wall is conceived as a reference to the “smart grid” of KDN business where information flows freely through an organized network. The wall will be comprised of a series of material layers of transparency and reflectivity that will present an ever-changing image to the street.
The KDN headquarters is organized to take advantage of the sites varied qualities. The office functions are consolidated in a compact and efficient vertical tower at the southwest area of the site to provide a sense of concentration and vitality about the corner. The other supporting and associated uses are distributed horizontally about the large landscaped site to take advantage of the open space and create a campus feel. The dormitories and athletic fields are to the west away from the business of the tower with the research and education facilities centrally located. A parking lot along the northern property line serves all facilities and buffers against future development. The entire complex then addresses itself to the primary southern roadway through a generous public plaza. This hybrid organization provides the best of both worlds with a concentrated vertical office tower and an expansive horizontal campus organization for the supporting facilities.
